During Children's Week, the gallery will be transformed into a place full of discovery, play, and imagination. Children will explore art in their own way — through making, looking, experimenting, and shared experiences. They will find inspiration in works by Slovak artists, which will show them that art is not only about looking, but also about questions, stories, and the power of one's own imagination.
Each day will bring a new theme and a fresh perspective on visual art — from line and colour, through the work of a curator, to collective creation. Children will try out a range of artistic techniques, experiment with unconventional materials, and get a glimpse into how the gallery works and what lies behind its doors. The programme will also include a week-long game, Gallery Explorer, which will guide children through the SNG's spaces in a playful way, using a map, tasks, and small artistic challenges. The programme is suitable for children aged 4 and above.
Programme:
THROUGHOUT THE WEEK / Gallery Explorer
All week long, children will explore the gallery's spaces using a map with tasks and stops placed throughout the exhibitions. The tasks will not be based on right or wrong answers, but on observation, imagination, and each child's own perspective on art. Children will look for interesting lines, colours, and shapes, complete the stories behind paintings, or add to selected motifs through drawing. Completed tasks will be rewarded with a small prize or the chance to take part in a special activity.
TUESDAY / The Frame as Part of the Work
On the first day, we will ask where a painting begins and where it ends. Together, we will explore the significance of the frame — whether it is merely an accessory or a border, or whether it can be a work of art in its own right. Children will create their own original frames from paper, card, and various decorative materials, then place their own drawing inside. Through making, we will look for connections between the work, the space, and the way art is presented and perceived.
WEDNESDAY / In the Footsteps of Rudolf Krivoš
Wednesday will be devoted to collective creation and imagination. Inspired by the works of Rudolf Krivoš, children will create their own creatures, animals, and fantastical heroes through drawing, collage, and pen-and-ink work. They will then bring their individual pieces together into a large-format collective artwork, built up through layering, gluing, and weaving different stories into one shared landscape. Children will experience first-hand how a wealth of individual ideas can come together to form one great, shared work.
