At the Saturday Studio, we will focus on the process of creating ornaments and on the simple rules that can transform the character of a single motif. We will experiment with what happens when rotating, mirroring, shifting, or scaling a motif, and how even a small change can affect the overall result and feel of the ornament.
We will explore the fundamental principles of ornament design—rhythm, repetition, symmetry, alternation, and layering. We will observe what happens to a motif when it is rotated, mirrored, scaled down or up, shifted, or overlapped with another shape. In this way, we will gradually move from a simple shape to a system. We will see how a rule can create order, but also how breaking it introduces tension, movement, or unexpected variations into the pattern.
Participants will create their own ornamental compositions and, through simple adjustments to the shape, explore different arrangement possibilities, observing how a simple motif can evolve into a pattern. The workshop is an invitation to view decoration differently—not as a finished embellishment, but as a system that we can deconstruct, transform, and use to create something new.
