During the Art Nouveau period, decoration in the applied arts gained extraordinary importance. Artists and designers turned their attention to nature and its forms, which they did not merely depict realistically. They observed, simplified, and stylized plants, flowers, leaves, and organic lines, developing them into standalone ornamental motifs.
These transformed natural forms found application in architecture, furniture, ceramics, graphics, and textile design. Participants will create their own decoration and transfer it onto fabric using a simple stencil technique.
In the process, they will explore how the principles of symmetry and mirroring can transform a simple shape into a more striking decorative element, allowing a basic form to evolve into a functional visual system that helps define the character of the object it adorns.
The result will be an original custom print on a tote bag that every participant will take home. The creative task builds on the themes from the opening part of the workshop, bridging historical and theoretical discussions about ornament, decorativeness, and textile design into hands-on experience.
