Enjoy guided tours, creative activities, meetings with experts, a glimpse behind the scenes, and a special programme accompanying the exhibitions. At the Slovak National Gallery, there is something for everyone during the Open Day – from curious children to curious adults.

Which artwork at SNG speaks to you the most today? Share your discovery, favourite artwork, or a thought that stayed with you. Leave your message on the board and become part of a collective collage of impressions created by our visitors.

Swap a book for a book. Discover art books and exhibition catalogues looking for a new reader, and bring your own book to exchange.

“Discover SNG” – A Gallery Challenge for All Ages
Location: Gallery spaces

Discover SNG in a whole new way. Pick up a map, set off on a journey through the gallery, and stop at four interactive stations along the way. Play curator, discover the different professions that make a gallery work, uncover fascinating facts from the world of art, and find out what is myth and what is fact. At each station, you will discover a hidden word. Once you have correctly filled them all into the puzzle, you will reveal a secret message and have the chance to enter a prize draw.

Open Studios with Activities
Location: Studio, Ground Floor

  • Create Your Own Magnetic Brooch

Create your own original brooch inspired by applied arts and jewellery from the Design in a Cube exhibition.

  • Beaded Pendant

Make your own beaded pendant featuring an SNG-inspired motif and decorate it according to your imagination.

  • Geometric Composition

Create your own geometric composition inspired by the works of Adam Szentpétery from the Network exhibition.

The Symbolism of Colours
Location: Esterházy Palace, 1st Floor

Discover how colours affect our emotions and how we perceive them in art and in everyday life.

Curator’s Talk: “Between the Walls of SNG” with Denis Haberland
Location: Entrance Hall, Ground Floor

A brief history of the architectural styles and changing functions of the individual buildings that make up SNG. Discover the specific construction methods, materials, design features, and technologies that have gradually become an integral part of the gallery itself—providing a setting for the presentation of art.

Gallery Talk: “Discover Slovak Modernism in Fragments”
Location: Water Barracks, 2nd Floor, Hall VII

How did Slovak modernism emerge? What did it mean to be a modern artist in Slovakia, and what avant-garde ideas found their way here? Together, we will explore selected works from the permanent collection and trace the development of Slovak modernism through their stories.

Behind the Scenes of Conservation
Location: Atrium

Take a peek into the fascinating world of our conservators. They will reveal the secrets of their work—from restoring old books and textiles to conserving wooden works of art—and introduce you to their daily practice, techniques, and the tools they use to restore and preserve works of art and other objects.

Gallery Talk: “The Story of the Linea Collection”
Location: Atrium, 2nd Floor, Hall IV

Discover the story of the Zubaľ family collection, which grew from a personal passion for art into one of the most significant donations in the history of the Slovak National Gallery. A selection of works spanning different periods offers insights into collecting, patronage, and the value of our artistic heritage.

Curator’s Talk: “Sacred Art” with Martin Čičo
Location: Water Barracks, 2nd Floor, Hall XIII

Join us for a guided tour of the permanent exhibition Sacred Art, featuring some of the oldest and most valuable Gothic and Baroque works from the collections of the Slovak National Gallery. And whether they are also the most beautiful? Come and decide for yourself. The tour begins at 15:00.

15:00–17:00

Talk for Parents and Educators: “Connecting the Gallery and the Classroom”
Location: Esterházy Palace, 1st Floor, Kornel and Nada Földvári Library

How can the principles of the curriculum reform be incorporated into a gallery visit? Discover a new approach to learning beyond the classroom, connecting visual art with all areas of education while fostering collaboration, creativity, and imagination.

New Lecture Series History in Art – with Historian Michal Bada
First Lecture: Coronations in Bratislava in the Early Modern Period
Location: Gallery Café, Ground Floor

This lecture will explore both well-known and lesser-known connections surrounding one of the most significant events in Bratislava’s history—the city’s coronation ceremonies. Discover which monarchs were crowned here, why Bratislava was chosen as the venue, and how the coronations took place.

Closing Event of the Galanda and the Galandists Exhibition, with the Launch of the New Catalogue
Curator’s Talk with Martin Vančo
Location: Bridge, 3rd Floor, Hall X

Say farewell to the Galanda and the Galandists exhibition with a curator’s talk exploring the work of the Galandists and their place in Slovak visual art. The programme will also include a discussion about the exhibition and its creation, followed by the ceremonial launch of the new Galanda and the Galandists catalogue.
