The Bang! Bang?! series represents fluid exhibitions of late modern and contemporary art at the Slovak National Gallery that cater to both local and foreign visitors, familiarising audiences with the central currents driving events on this scene, as well as with its major, and its lesser-known, protagonists.
Bang?! Bang! 2 focuses on conceptual and geometric tendencies, which in many ways have shaped the character of Slovak art to this day. New figuration and existentially attuned post-surrealism are also given due attention. Emerging from the liberal 1960s, these art forms catapulted the Slovak, or rather Czechoslovak, art scene into the global elite, as can still be seen in the international recognition of personalities such as Mria Bartuszová and Stanislav Filko.
Further, we cannot overlook the postmodern period, which in the Slovak context is represented primarily by the painting dynamism of Laco Teren. An unmissable element of the exhibition is the significant representation of women, an aspect that was, and which remains, a distinctive feature of Slovak art since the modernist emancipation.
