Statement of the Slovak National Gallery regarding the hacker attacks on the webumenia.sk platform

Uverejnené dňa 30. July 2026
In recent days, the SNG has recorded repeated hacker attacks on our server, which is hosted by the company Websupport. This was not an attack on the gallery's website, www.sng.sk, but rather an intrusion into the webumenia.sk platform, an online catalogue of visual artworks designed for the general public. Immediately upon detecting the suspicious activity, security measures were implemented to minimize risks and ensure the protection of both data and infrastructure. The webumenia.sk service is once again fully operational and accessible to the public.

As for the Central Register of Artworks (CEDVU), this database was in no way affected by the hacker attacks. It is a separate information system that is not connected to webumenia.sk. The information published in the press release by Member of Parliament Dana Kleinert (Progressive Slovakia), claiming that Slovakia's cultural heritage is threatened, is untrue, and we consider it a politicization of the situation aimed at further damaging the SNG's reputation.

At the Slovak National Gallery, efforts are currently underway to determine the causes of the hacker attacks and remedy their consequences, with SNG's IT experts working alongside security engineers from CSIRT (a department of MIRRI tasked with resolving cybersecurity incidents). The Slovak National Gallery deems it necessary to strongly push back against the public statements of the MP, which create the impression of a systemic failure or a threat to national cultural heritage. Such claims are highly misleading and needlessly escalate tension in the public sphere. A cyber incident requires a technical solution, not political interpretation.

The Slovak National Gallery rejects allegations that it underestimated the cybersecurity situation or even acted deliberately to endanger Slovakia's cultural heritage. We consider the exploitation of a hacker attack for the purposes of a specific political entity to be deeply unfortunate. We do not see a genuine interest in the gallery here, but rather an attempt to score political points. Currently, the SNG is implementing systemic measures that will strengthen the protection of all the gallery's digital tools. The gallery is proceeding in accordance with expert recommendations and applicable security standards.
