Press release: The Slovak National Gallery has a new artistic director: He wants to strengthen its international standing and develop new partnerships

Uverejnené dňa 7. July 2026
Bratislava, 7 July 2026 – Patrik Steinhauser, a respected expert with extensive experience in gallery practice and the European art environment, took up the position of new Artistic Director on 1 July 2026. His vision is to strengthen the standing of the SNG as a modern cultural institution that will be a partner to leading European galleries.

One of the main priorities of the new Artistic Director will be the development of international cooperation. Thanks to long-standing professional contacts, he wants to establish new partnerships with leading galleries, museums, curators and other experts in the field of visual art. The aim is to expand opportunities for joint exhibition projects, professional exchanges, scientific and research cooperation, and the presentation of Slovak visual art abroad.

An important part of his tenure will also be the systematic strengthening of the professional reputation of the Slovak National Gallery in a European and broader international context. The ambition is to build the SNG as a confident national gallery that is a respected partner in the preparation of prestigious international projects.

Into the management of the artistic division, he brings extensive experience in the management of a gallery institution, strategic planning, and the building of foreign professional ties. In his work, he wants to connect a high professional level with a modern managerial approach that will support the efficient functioning of the artistic division and the high-quality preparation of the gallery's exhibition projects.

Alongside developing foreign partnerships, he will also be responsible for the professional direction of exhibition dramaturgy, the development of collection-building activities, and cooperation with the domestic professional scene.

"My ambition in the position of Artistic Director is for the SNG to be even more prominently present in the international professional environment and to establish new partnerships with leading European galleries and museums. My vision is for the gallery to become an internationally connected platform for the future of visual art in Slovakia. The Slovak National Gallery should connect artists, art theorists, universities, galleries and foreign cultural institutions, and thereby strengthen the entire cultural environment of the country," says the new Artistic Director of the SNG, Patrik Steinhauser.

SNG General Director Juraj Králik believes that his arrival represents a significant impulse for the further development of the institution. "The Slovak National Gallery continues to fulfil and consistently ensure all obligations arising from the law in the administration, protection and enhancement of the collection fund, as well as in ensuring the operation of the institution. I am convinced that expanding the gallery's creative team with his professional experience and extensive network of foreign contacts will be of great benefit to the SNG," stated SNG General Director Juraj Králik.
