PR: The Slovak National Gallery has opened a new exhibition, Bang?! Bang! 2.

Uverejnené dňa 4. May 2026
30 April 2026, Bratislava – Bang?! Bang! yet again. Was one exhibition with this title not enough? For lovers of contemporary art, it seems not. The Slovak art scene offers an exceptionally rich and multi-layered narrative that calls for a new interpretation.

The exhibition Bang?! Bang! 2 follows on from the exhibition of the same name, Bang?! Bang!, and seamlessly develops its concept. This time, the focus is on art emerging from the liberal 1960s, which catapulted the Slovak—or rather, Czechoslovak—art scene into the global elite.

Juraj Bartusz, Marián Čunderlík, Stanislav Filko, Viktor Hulík, Alojz Klimo, Vladislav Rostoka, and Laco Teren – these are just a few of the prominent names whose works the public can, after a long hiatus, once again see in the exhibition halls of the Slovak National Gallery. The second edition of the exhibition showcases the diversity of artistic activity on the Slovak scene from the 1960s to the present day.

The curatorial focus in Bang?! Bang! 2 is directed primarily towards conceptual and geometric tendencies, which have significantly influenced the shape of Slovak art to this day. Alongside these, the exhibition reflects new figurative representation and post-surrealism with an emphasis on human existence. These are artistic movements that arose from the liberal atmosphere of the 1960s and contributed significantly to the international recognition of the Czecho-Slovak art scene. This impact continues to be validated today by the work of figures such as Maria Bartuszová and Stanislav Filko.

"This project presents the era of the 1960s and its artistic representatives, who were able to establish themselves not only on the domestic stage but also internationally. The public thus has the opportunity to absorb the unique energy and atmosphere of this period, and to observe the artistic dialogue and mutual inspiration between such distinctive artists," explains Juraj Králik, Director General of the Slovak National Gallery.

The project also explores less traditional techniques and media. One of these is the now almost forgotten art-protis (a non-woven textile technique), which was exceptionally popular from the late 1950s to the 1980s. At the exhibition, it is represented by the versatile artist Vladimír Popovič. Significant space is also given to conceptual artist Peter Rónai, who has prepared an original installation for the exhibition.

The public will also encounter a specific visual phenomenon – posters. With their inventive graphic language, they complete the atmosphere of the various periods. Visitors will notice this aspect, for instance, in the works of Marián Čunderlík or the visuals of Vladislav Rostoka.
