The project was developed in partnership with the Slovak Philharmonic. The inaugural concert takes place on Saturday 11 April at 4pm and initiates a new tradition within the gallery premises.
The opening event features a performance by the Slovak Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Ewald Danel who will symbolically introduce this new format. The programme displays virtuosity elegance and a vibrant spring atmosphere. Under the title Bratislava Musical Pictures the concert showcases works by composers who share a strong connection with Bratislava. These individuals were born lived or worked in the city and their influence remains central to its cultural memory.
Audiences will experience works and musical miniatures by celebrated masters such as Marc Antoine Charpentier Johann Sigismund Kusser Joseph Haydn Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Johann Nepomuk Hummel Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Johannes Brahms Oskar Nedbal Béla Bartók Eugen Suchoň Vladimír Godár Ladislav Kupkovič and Ilja Zeljenka.
Juraj Králik the General Director of the SNG describes this as an exceptional project. He noted that he is pleased to launch this artistic endeavour between two prominent cultural institutions at the SNG. The objective is to provide visitors with a holistic artistic experience where music space and visual art naturally intersect. The ambition remains to enrich the cultural landscape with a format that combines elite visual art with musical performance of the highest calibre.
A regular concert series is being established within the historic and contemporary spaces of the SNG. This is a place where sound meets image and emotion meets space providing a new dimension to musical appreciation. Each concert is carefully integrated into the context of current exhibitions permanent collections and the architecture of the gallery. This approach offers visitors an immersive and unique artistic journey. The new format provides an opportunity to perceive both the gallery and the music from a different perspective as a living interconnected artistic environment.
The Slovak Chamber Orchestra which opens the series at the SNG performs under the artistic leadership of Ewald Danel. Professor Bohdan Warchal initiated the ensemble in 1960 by recruiting exceptional players from the string section of the Slovak Philharmonic. During the 2025 to 2026 concert season the Slovak Chamber Orchestra celebrates its 65th anniversary.
