Library

The new Art History Library in the gallery complex was created by merging the Library of the Slovak National Gallery with the Academic Library of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Within its pleasant space overlooking the courtyard, you can study art history literature, specialist periodicals, and documents from the collections of both libraries.

About the SNG Art History Library

The Art History Library of the Slovak National Gallery was established in 1949, one year after the gallery’s foundation. Within the system of Slovak libraries, it is classified as a special library. It specialises in documents from the field of theory and history of fine arts, architecture, and related disciplines. Currently, the library's collection comprises more than 100,000 documents and contains one of the largest collections of exhibition catalogues in Slovakia. It also administers the historical documents of the library at Mansion Strážky, and a unique collection of books located at The Kornel and Nade Földvári Library.

About the AFAD Academic Library

Establishment of the AFAD Academic Library in Bratislava in 1952 is credited to the eminent Czech art historian Jiří Kotalík. Development of the library during its early years was primarily driven by two of its employees, Mr and Mrs Volavka. They exploited their foreign contacts to acquire a wealth of literature for the library, which became an information source about otherwise unavailable Western trends in art. The AFAD Academic Library specialises in art history literature and related social and scientific disciplines. Holding more than 41,000 documents, it has the second largest art history collection in Slovakia.
