Freedom Endures. Censorship, Propaganda, and Art

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the Slovak National Gallery has prepared a project consisting of curatorial interventions in long-term collection displays, along with a series of expert lectures and guided tours for the public.

The theme of this project is the intersection of art and politics, the topics of censorship, propaganda, and artistic freedom, not only in relation to art created up until 1989 but also throughout the entire history of art. At the Slovak National Gallery, we believe that all art and culture are born in freedom, and this project is one of many curatorial-educational initiatives that, by connecting art history with the present, expands our knowledge, perceptiveness, and understanding.

The interventions that take the form of veiling selected works in the long-term exhibitions at the Slovak National Gallery, will be on display from 14 September to 24 November 2024. Curatorial lectures and guided tours will take place in October and November. Specific dates for the accompanying programs will soon be available on www.sng.sk in the Events section.

This project is a continuation, in terms of both genre and themes, of past activities of SNG, including the "art-historical undertaking" Action ZET or the ČAS-OPIS 1989.
